Playbill.com Review

Not every review will be four gold stars. That is true for the new review by Steven Suskin on Playbill.com, but it was better then I had expected. I often read 'On the Record' to get the 'IN' on new recordings, and I've always enjoyed how honest Steven's reviews are and his review for 'Dreaming Wide Awake' is no exception. I am honored to have Steven review my CD.

A Year End Note ...

This year has really passed by quickly, hasn't it ? I normally run through a list of what I was thankful for this past year, yet, I know I would be missing something, so I am going to make this short and sweet. I am thankful for great friends, incredible new friends, and my beautiful family. I am grateful for wonderful health and the progression of success. I am excited for 2008 and I believe this year will be the best one yet. I can't wait to get it started and to see all of you on January 7th. Let's test one another, and push each other to achieve dreams we never thought possible and reach for horizons we never thought were in our reach. Anything is possible if you put your mind and heart to it. For those of you who have taken time out of your lives to write me this year, thank you for inspiring me and pushing me further. Normally I live for tomorrow, this year, I want to live for today.

I am wishing each of you a celebrated remainder of 2007 and I look forward to seeing each of us accomplish our dreams as we head into 2008. To good friends, family and success.

Things that make me happy ...

The small things in life make me happy. If you go to All That Chat you will see a cute new banner on the top of the screen for my concert at Birdland. But, wait !!! It's also a banner for Chita's benefit concert, as well, at Birdland. Who ever thought that Chita and I would be sharing a banner together ? Thanks Jim Caruso. I couldn't love it more.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE !!!

Best,
SA

ps. It rotates between three other banners, so if you don't see it, just refresh your screen ;)

I get that Jewish Christmas feeling ....

Hey folks -
Well, Christmas is right around the corner, and I still am in shock and disbelief that in a week we will be celebrating a new year, which means, in two weeks, we will be celebrating the 'official' release of my CD. It is all so very exciting for me. This week my CD 'Dreaming Wide Awake' will hits its first store. Granted, it is a store in the UK, but heck, that is still very exciting. For those of you in London, go check it out at The Dress Circle on Manmouth Street. Slowly but surely, right ?!?!? One store out of 10 million is a great start ;)
So, as for the CD release party, it is now about two wees away, and I have to be honest, I am BEYOND nervous for it. I always have pretty bad anxiety about performing in front of people, and this night will be the biggest fear of them all. With the exception of my family and maybe five or six friends, I won't know anyone in the audience. The major fear is this ....ready ...let me act it out for you ... 'Ladies and Gentleman, 'Shoshana Bean' HUGE APPLAUSE ... Ladies and Gentlemen, 'Eden Espinosa' HUGE APPLAUSE ... Ladies and Gentleman,' Cheyenne Jackson' HUGE APPLAUSE ... Ladies and Gentleman, 'Scott Alan' ...cricket, cricket, cricket, cricket ... See, I am well aware that people see the lineup and say 'YES, I AM THERE,' but my fear is, will I feel like mister cellophane at my own ball ? Only time will tell. I am hoping more of my friends come to the concert and sit at the bar to cheer me on. Ok, it's still two weeks away and my heart is beating faster then ever. Calm down, calm down. I am singing four songs at the show. Two songs are from my musical 'The Warmth of the Womb,' one song is from the CD, and one is a brand new song that I haven't even finished yet, so it should be very interesting. For those asking, yes, all the performers are still on board. Sadly, we thought Tracie Thoms would be joining us, but just yesterday she had to pull out due to a date change for another scheduled performance. We will miss her.
As for Monday Nights, New Voices, I am going to start putting together that program this weekend, so those of you who have been asking 'how do I audition,' just send an mp3, headshot and resume to MNNVINFO@yahoo.com. I will be listening to all submissions this weekend.
That really seems like all right now. I will be doing my year end wrap up post next, so stay tuned ....xo -SA

New Tickets available ...

Hey Everyone -

A very very small amount of new tickets just went on sale for the January 7th concert @ Birdland .... if you wanted to attend, didn't get tickets in time and don't want to wait on line the night of the concert for bar seats (yes, those under 21 can attend), please visit www.birdlandjazz.com NOW .... they will go soon ...

happy holidays

update: Sold out again !!! Congratz to the lucky few who got tickets ...to everyone else. Come the evening of the show, and watch the show in the comforts of the bar area (yes, those under 21 are permitted to attend). Doors open at 5pm. First come first serve, but I have been told, everyone who shows should be able to get in !!!

Answering Questions

Hey Guys -
A lot of people seem to ask me the same questions over and over (not that I am complaining. I love that you care), so I thought I would take this time to answer a few of them:

Your CD Release party at Birdland is sold out. Can I still Attend ?

Yes you can. Even though the dining room is sold out, there are a good amount of seats available at the bar area.

Can I make a reservation for those tickets ?

No, you must show up early the day of the show to get a seat.

How early is early ?

Well, doors open at 5pm. I don't know how many people will show up, so I can't answer that question. That is up to you.

But I am under 21. Does that matter ?

No, it doesn't. Birdland serves as a restaurant, so you are good to go.

I hate sitting at the bar, will tickets for the dining room open up ?

ABSOLUTELY. There are ALWAYS no shows. Again, show up early, and cross your fingers. I think EVERYONE who shows up will get into the show, either in the dining room or sitting at the bar. I have been told that they have never turned anyone away at Birdland for a Concert. I don't see my show being the first.

Will everyone announced be at the show ?

As of now, yes. Everyone announced will be there. Sadly, someone could get a cold, or get a tv show or get asked by Jason Robert Brown to do a concert of his music that night instead, so you never know.

I want to buy sheet music. Are these the arrangements from 'Dreaming Wide Awake ?'

No, none of the arrangements are from 'Dreaming Wide Awake.'

It says that the sheet music for I'm a Star is the audition version. What does that mean ?

It means that it is not the full version, as sung by Eden Espinosa, but the shorter version, demo'd by Marla Mindelle. It is missing the bridge and extra verse that follows.

Will you ever release the arrangements from 'Dreaming Wide Awake ?'

Yes, we are starting discussions now to get Jesse's arrangements into a published book.

Why is the sheet music so damn expensive ?

You bought the CD, right ? That's why. I couldn't have afforded to pay for the production of the CD without making an income. The sales from the sheet music are saved in an account that only goes towards creating more music.

I am performing Never Neverland/Now/I'm a Star/Magic/etc, for my high school choir/high school dance/graduation/Bar Mitzvah/New Baby Brothers briss ....What is the back story of the song ?

I tell this to everyone singing my music. It's not about where the song came from, but where the song comes from. Sing from your heart. If you connect to the song, why ? Find that place and trust your heart. You will be fantastic. (Your baby brothers screaming has nothing to do with your singing, so don't take it personal).

Will you be doing concerts outside of NYC ?

Yes I will. Stay Tuned. ;)

Will 'Piece' ever have it's World Premiere ?

Yes it will. Stay Tuned. ;)

Are Stephanie J. Block and Shoshana Bean going to be the stars ?

We would be so lucky.

Hmmmmm, I think that seems to be all for now .... any more questions, please feel free to ask and maybe it may make the next round of Questions from my favorite people ...YOU !!!!

My first video blog ...

So, a pal got me one of those flip video's (you might have seen it on Oprah's Favorite Things episode) and so I thought it would be kinda neat to do a video blog, and yet, I am rather boring ...soooo, I decided instead to sing a little ditty on my video blog .... I don't think I will ever do this again (though, i will be doing video blogs on the New Voices show and the CD release party ...I just meant, I probably wont do the singing thing), and I probably will take it down in less then 24 hours cause I'm a paranoid Jew, so there is a chance only the die hard fans will see this, (aka my mother)...Anyhoo, this is me performing The Journey from 'Dreaming Wide Awake.' I probably should have recorded this again, since half of my face is missing throughout the entire video (and when you do see it, I make funny faces ...not on purpose. That's just how I sing. Sucks, right ? ) and some notes are rather ...um ...sharp ... so be nice to me ...oh, and if you don't have the CD, please understand one thing. JOSH STRICKLAND AND JILL ZADEH SING THIS SONG MUCH BETTER THEN ME ON THE CD ...Buy it and find it ;) (good plug, right ?!?!)

Because so many people are asking ...

I have gotten so many emails about this - the concert on January 7th is at 7:30, not 7pm. It says 7pm on the Birdland website, and initially it was set for 7pm, but it is now 7:30 for all those attending.

Also, as I said before, yes, I have been told, again, that they should be able to fit all of you into the bar area on the night of January 7th, so if you don't have a ticket, show up early and it will be first come first serve ... I have a few little surprises up my sleeve right now, so I am excited ...some special guests ... it really should be an incredible night, and not just for the audience, but for me as well. It is exciting for me, and I can't wait to meet so many of you that evening.

Oh, and a quick note. I got an email from an 'unsatisfied' buyer of the CD ... I bought him a gift certificate for iTunes (I wont be doing that for everyone, mind you). If you buy the entire CD you will see that I am FULLY aware not all the songs on the CD are musical theatre. Some songs are pop songs I have written, some are theatre songs, some are songs I wrote years ago. I explain it all in the CD booklet, for those interested. I knew that having theatre performers on the CD may suggest that this is a full on Theatre CD, but it is not. I have a country song on the CD ('Surrender'), and pop songs on the CD ('The Journey,') and pop/rock songs ('Let Love Begin') and yes, even full on theatre song ('I'm a Star'). If you are buying this album thinking there will be that great 'William Finn' type song, that is not my style of writing (he is amazing, though, by the way. I am blown away by his writing style). I don't apologize for it, but I understand some peeople wanting that and being dissatisfied, so if you REALLY have a problem with the CD,email me and, if it's a strong enough case, maybe we can work something out .... to those of you who love the CD, I wont buy you an iTunes gift card ... it may be more valuable to hate it ....xoxo

WISHING YOU ALL THE BEST ...Im off to the vet with my pup -SA

Liz Callaway, 'New Voices,' and more !!!

Hey There -
What a week it's been. I still can't get over my cold, blar, but it was so nice to wake up this morning and see the snow on the ground. I love watching my little white dog fade into the ground. He hops around like a jack rabbit, and it's his favorite time of year, so why not make it mine.
On Friday night, my friend Victor and I had the privilege of attending Liz Callaways 'Between Flights' concert at the Metropolitan Room. For those who bought the actual 'Dreaming Wide Awake' CD and had the chance to read the booklet, you noticed what an importance Liz has had on my life. I grew up listening to Liz, and her version of Meadowlark was played in my CD player so many times, I wore three copies of that CD out. Now, 29, and working in the industry, I sat here, watching her perform, and the moment she sang 'Meadowlark,' well, to quote the lyric, 'I cried.' It amazed me. This incredible and beautiful and talented woman that stood before me, that I had idolized for years, was now in front of me, performing from her heart, and, I knew her. More important, she was on my CD. She now sings my music. She is joining me for a concert in January of my music. I sat in amazement of my life, and how far I have come from that insecure 17 yr old high school student, with no friends, who sat in the corner table of the lunch room, alone, listening to my Liz Callaway CD and dreaming of escaping from it all. Now, I have a CD, and hopefully, I am helping other insecure 17 yr old's escape from it all as well. That being said, Liz's show was BRILLIANT. So brilliant that, even though I had to pee from the moment the show began, I held it in till the hour and a half show ended. I have been drinking Cranberry choice since ...jk .... There is one more show tonight, so if you haven't gone yet ..GO, GO GO !!!!
We started rehearsal for the Monday Nights, New Voices wrap up show on December 10th. This show is going to be AMAZING, so if you haven't made reservations, best to do so now. Where else can you see some of todays best composers, such as Jeff Blumenkrantz, Tom Kitt, David Kirshenbaum, Deborah Abramson, Jeff Bowen, Ilene Reid and Michael Heitzman, Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin accompanying some of todays Newst Voicest and joined by wonderful stars such as Lauren Kennedy, Tina Maddigan and, of course, Chip Zien ? It is gong to be a night to remember. I still can't believe, this little show, is now turning four years old. Pretty crazy, huh ?
Outside of that, I am already starting to put together the CD release concert. Outside of the songs from the CD, some of the performers will be singing some songs from Piece, The Warmth of the Womb, and my new, *SECRET,* Musical. I am really looking forward to it all. Sadly, we have had one more performer drop out; Adriane Lenox. One of the other performers, though, will be singing 'Magic.' Hmmm ...I wonder who ? ;)

As I said, I have had a horrible sinus cold going on three weeks now. I am not enjoying it. I feel fine, but I sound like I have tissues up my nose. Not sexy. Not sexy at all. I hope you are all enjoying your December and I look forward to seeing you either on December 10th or January 7th.

Best,
SA
